Why coffee can interfere with vitamins/minerals Coffee contains polyphenols (like chlorogenic acid) that can bind to certain nutrients, making them harder for your body to absorb. It can lower absorption of: Zinc Calcium Vitamin B (especially B1 – thiamine) Oddly, some research suggests coffee might increase vitamin D levels — but that’s not a reason to take it with your supplements. Practical advice from experts Limit caffeine to ~200 mg/day (about 2 cups brewed coffee) for the best balance between benefits and drawbacks. Avoid taking supplements within an hour of coffee if they contain zinc, calcium, or B vitamins. If you’re deficient in those nutrients, spacing them out from coffee is even more important. Tip: If you love coffee and take morning vitamins, drink your coffee first, then take supplements later in the morning (or with lunch) for better absorption.
